About
The Administration of Justice: Corrections degree and Correction Deputy Academy certificate provides entry-level training for correctional officers, including adult corrections procedures, interviewing and counseling techniques, security and supervision techniques, and oral and written communications.The Associate of Science in Corrections or the Correctional Deputy Academy certificate program allows students to complete training required to become correctional officers.

Overview
This is a 15 to 18 unit program of study, depending on completion goal and not counting general education requirements. Students may choose to fulfill either the certificate or associate degree requirements. Additionally, students interested in the Correctional Academy need to apply and be admitted into the program. Academy admission is not guaranteed.

This program is designed to be completed in four semesters with students attending fall and spring. You can reduce your per-semester unit load by taking courses in the summer or winter sessions. Some courses are only offered in the spring or fall terms.
Program completion within this time frame is dependent upon math placement, the number of units enrolled per term, and course availability. Full-time students are recommended to take 12 to 15 units per term. Meet with a counselor to develop your Student Educational Plan (SEP), determine the appropriate general education pattern, and figure out how to maintain a work/life/school balance.
Upon successful completion of this program, students should be able to:
- Identify the basic safety components of working in a correctional facility, including, but not limited to inmate safety, personal safety and facility safety.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of classification of inmates.
- Identify the key liability issues that impact the individual correctional officer and the facility as a whole.
- Interpret codes, statutes, and policies as they relate to the care and custody of inmates in a correctional facility.
- Apply principles and tactics to maintain control and security while working with groups of inmates in a correctional facility
- These programs of study meet or exceed the mandates of the California Board of Corrections and Rehabilitation. These programs fulfill the state-mandated Corrections Standards Authority training requirements to work in city or county correctional facilities intended to incarcerate adult offenders.
- The ADJ-C1D Basic Correctional Deputy Academy course meets or exceeds the mandates of the California Board of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
