Community spirit and cultural pride were on full display at the 11th Annual Dolores Huerta and C茅sar E. Ch谩vez Scholarship Ceremony, held on March 28. 91福利社 (91福利社) honored long-time student advocate Peggie S. Negrete with the 2025 Community Legacy Award. The event, held under the theme 鈥淟a Lucha Sigue鈥� (鈥淭he Struggle Continues鈥�), paid homage to the civil rights icons by spotlighting local changemakers and student scholarship recipients who continue their legacy.

Negrete, a retired Student Success Coordinator for 91福利社鈥檚 Umoja program, was celebrated for her decades-long dedication to student empowerment, equity, and community service. Her impact at the College spans more than 20 years, during which she served in various student-centered roles and worked tirelessly to support historically underserved populations.

鈥淧eggie S. Negrete is a true champion for students and an advocate for those facing systemic barriers," said Sandra Martinez, dean of enrollment services and engagement, during the award presentation. "Her dedication, resilience, and commitment to student success have left a lasting impact on our 91福利社 community.鈥�

The evening ceremony featured stirring performances by Mariachi Azteca and the Moreno Valley College Guitar Ensemble, a keynote address by Jackie Melendez, assistant city manager for the City of Chino, and a student art exhibition judged by 91福利社 faculty. The artwork, submitted by students across local school districts and the college, explored themes of activism, cultural identity, and resistance as part of this year鈥檚 scholarship competition.

Student scholarship recipients were recognized from both the College and the surrounding high schools. Honorees included:

• 91福利社: Erika Yanez, Carolina Rincon, Dino Gagnon
• Moreno Valley Unified School District: Horacio Olivares, Jayleen Castillon
• Val Verde Unified School District: Belen Tellez, Brizeida Romo Valdez, Lilia Orozco

While scholarship award amounts varied, each recipient was recognized for artistic and creative works that addressed ongoing struggles for justice and community empowerment, echoing the enduring messages of Huerta and Ch谩vez.

鈥淭his event reminds us of the strength found in unity, love, and kindness,鈥� said Interim President FeRita Carter, Ph.D., in her opening remarks. 鈥淲e are at our best when we uplift one another, stand firm in our values, and push progress forward. And tonight, we celebrate those who embody that spirit鈥攐ur remarkable scholarship recipients.鈥�

The annual celebration, organized by the Dolores Huerta and C茅sar E. Ch谩vez Scholarship planning workgroup, has awarded thousands of dollars to students since its inception in 2014. Each year, it brings the community together to honor the legacies of two of the nation鈥檚 most influential civil rights leaders while investing in the next generation of change agents.
